Lanark United Cup Final

Sectional League Cup Final Sunday 13/10/2019

Auchinleck Talbot 6 v 1 Lanark United

Firstly thanks again to the huge travelling support from Lanark and surrounding areas as well as Auchinleck Talbot who hosted the match and provided excellent hospitality to all.

Lanark’s task was hard enough playing the top junior side in Scotland on their home patch in this final but this was made even harder after only two minutes when Lanark keeper Scott Johnson put an attempted clearance in to the path of Boylan who despatched the ball in to the visiting net for 1-0

This set back was. It what was needed but Lanark fought back in to the match and created a chance on 5 minutes when a ball in from the left was just out of the reach of returning striker Lewis Hill.

Talbot kept Lanark pinned back without creating any clear cut chances with Lanark being limited to chances on the break, one of these came when Martin linked with Shug Kerr but the final shot from Martin went just wide of the target.

On 26 minutes a free kick from the impressive PJ O’Donnell for Lanark again broke for Martin but his thunderous effort was blocked and cleared.

Lanark were made to pay for not being clinical in finishing when a minute later a free kick in from the Talbot left looked to have been gathered by Johnson but the ball ended in the net after he looked to have been impeded but neither the referee nor his assistant saw any foul and to the amazement of the Lanark faithful they found their side 2-0 down.

Lanark went on from this setback to have their best spell of the match on the run up to half time and on 31 minutes captain Cammy Lawson saw a header saved by the home keeper after a corner, a couple of minutes later Lanark put themselves back in to the match when O’Donnell picked up the ball just inside the opposition half and after beating a couple of defenders he hit a fantastic strike that found the postage stamp corner from all of 25 yards for 2-1.

Lanark had the last chance of the half as well when another O’Donnell free kick found Martin at the back post but his effort only found the side netting.

Half time Auchinleck Talbot 2 v 1 Lanark United

Lanark’s mini revival was well and truly put on the back burner only 10 seconds in to the second half when Ian Watt looked to be harshly adjudged to have pushed his opponent in the box at the expense of a penalty and Shankland despatched the kick past Johnson despite the keeper getting close to the ball for 3-1.

This goal knocked the stuffing out of the visitors from Lanarkshire and but for a good turn and shot from Kerr that was saved by Leishman they were on the back foot for most of the half and their job was made harder when Watt suffered a serious injury that saw the match stopped for almost ten minutes.

It did however take O’Neil the last quarter of the match for Talbot to put the match well beyond Lanark when the visitors lost possession in the middle of the park and the home side scored a fourth, then an effort from the left on 85 minutes made it 5-1.

The final goal came well in to stoppage time to see a final score of 6-1 that earned Talbot the first silverware of the season as they did last season as well.

A ball g thanks goes to all who contributed to the day put on for Lanark allowing them the chance to pit themselves against a higher League side for the fourth time in the competition but ultimately it was a step too far and it is back to league duties this weekend away to Port Glasgow.
