The Royal Burgh of Lanark Town Council ceases to exist due to Local Government re-organisation.
On the 16th May 1975, as a result of local government re-organisation, the Royal Burgh of Lanark Town Council ceased to govern after period of seven hundred and thirty five years.
Among its last official functions were the annual Kirkin’ of the Council and the disbursing of £4,715 from the Common Good Fund. The Provost and Magistrates robes were officially worn for the last time on duties in Yvetot, Normandy as part of twinning ceremonies.
The successor to the Royal Burgh of Lanark, Lanark District Council, was itself abolished in 1995 with creation of South Lanarkshire Council under yet another local government re- organisation.
