New Lanark is opening its spectacular Roof Garden—the largest rooftop garden in Scotland—on Saturday and Sunday, 9–10 August 2025, from 12 pm to 4 pm, as part of the Scotland’s Garden Scheme.
Set atop Mill 2 in the UNESCO World Heritage village, this 9,000 sq ft horticultural marvel—designed by Douglas Coltart—recreates elegant curves inspired by the historic water‑wheel machinery and features hardy plantings including yew, honeysuckle, thistle, and allium, all chosen to withstand winds at 350 ft elevation.
Lovers of nature can also enjoy decorative water features, animal sculptures, and even occasional wildlife like ducks, birds, butterflies, and insects.
This year, the garden is being replanted to reflect its original 2008 layout—making the occasion extra special.
Admission is £5 (free for children), with a £3 parking fee and a shuttle bus to the village; refreshments will be available in the Visitor Attraction café.
All proceeds support Scotland’s Garden Scheme’s charitable initiatives, including local good causes and horticultural bursaries.
It’s a unique chance to explore this rooftop wonder, enjoy sweeping valley views, and help fund meaningful community projects.
