Much-loved Scottish TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has officially opened the ‘John Cunningham Creative Centre’ at Langloch Farm - a vibrant new hub set to transform lives across the region.
The new facility, named in honour of Border Biscuits’ founder, promises to be a beacon of creativity, learning and skill development for the Lanark community.
Clydesdale Community Initiatives (CCI), will provide up to 250 annual workshops and classes for the Lanark community, ranging from essential life skills such as tool and bicycle repair and furniture upcycling, to enriching art sessions in music, stained glass, pottery, and sculpture. Each offering is designed to equip participants, including those with complex support needs, with practical skills, boost confidence and unlock new opportunities.
Its naming recognises John Cunningham’s remarkable contributions to the community and his enduring legacy of philanthropy. Known for visionary leadership and deep-rooted commitment to community engagement, John was a long-time supporter of local causes, particularly initiatives that promoted well-being, learning and sustainable development.
Tina Cunningham, CEO, Border Biscuits, said: "The opening of the John Cunningham Creative Centre is a truly poignant moment, celebrating our founder John, whose vision for community support was truly exceptional. “His belief was that true support goes beyond donations – it’s about active engagement and empowering organisations to sustain themselves. This centre, brought to life through our partnership with CCI, is a direct embodiment of that belief. We are incredibly proud to see his legacy continue to make such a tangible difference, helping hundreds of people learn, create and connect."
For over 40 years, family-owned Border Biscuits has kept true to John’s core values of putting product, people, excellence, success, conduct and community at the heart of everything it does.
The business commits 10% of its profits annually to charitable efforts and by the end of 2025, up to £2 million would be invested in community initiatives and good causes. This commitment reflects the founder’s philosophy and his personal belief that a business exists to serve society. The Trust is also an award-winning charity, earning the 'Commitment to the Community' award at ‘The Herald Scottish Family Business Awards’ in 2024. CCI, an independent charity dedicated to community participation and skill development, has been a significant beneficiary of this long-term partnership.
Niall McShannon, Clydesdale Community Initiative, Managing Director said: "We are incredibly excited to see the ‘John Cunningham Creative Centre’ officially open its doors. This centre is a game-changer for the individuals we support, offering them a dedicated space to learn, grow, and connect. The vision of John Cunningham and the ongoing commitment from Border Biscuits through the trust have made this possible, and we look forward to witnessing the profound difference it will make in people's lives."
A passionate advocate for charitable causes and a supporter of Border Biscuits' community initiatives, Lorraine Kelly expressed her enthusiasm for the new facility: "It's an absolute honour to be here, and I’m thrilled to help bring John Cunningham’s vision to life. This centre is more than just a building - it’s a place where creativity will flourish, vital skills will be honed, and lives will genuinely be transformed.
“This is a testament to John’s incredible spirit and Border Biscuits’ unwavering commitment to Lanark, and I have no doubt this fantastic initiative will make a profound and lasting positive impact on people’s lives.”
